History
Allstate originally began in 1931; founded by Sears Robuck CEO General Robert E. Wood. Wood, got the idea from a friend on an early morning train ride to Chicago, and he eventually pitched the idea to the board of directors at Sears Roebuck and Sears decided to back the company after careful consideration with some 700,000 dollars.
With the automobiles on the rise there was plenty of room for growth and so the journey of Allstate began. The company opened for business with a borrowed name from a tire sold in the sears catalog which began the great legacy we all know and trust today; Allstate, one month later Allstate recognized William Lehnertz as its first policy holder charging him $41.60 for a one year policy. By the end of that year all state had 4,217 policies and approximately 20 employees.
In 1939 Allstate was the first company to tailor auto rates by age mileage and use of a car. By the end of 1939 Allstate had 113,472 policy holders and 529 employees. Allstate continued to grow rapidly and in 1950 it got the great slogan that upholds it today. It was an Allstate manager who created the very famous slogan “your in good hands with Allstate”. By 1959 Allstate was the leading insurance company not only selling automobile insurance but other types of insurance as well. Furthermore they had a whopping 5.3 million policyholders and 14,633 employees.

Cultures
According to the Allstate website, "Our business is one that is built on caring - a value that has been at the core of our relationship with customers, employees and agents for more than 70 years" (Careers). Allstate is one of the few websites that posts their culture on their site in order for people to know what they are about. The companies commitment is about integrity, which is doing the right thing for the right reasons. This is important when it comes to an insurance company because insurance has to be about doing the right thing, whether it is life insurance or car insurance.
Allstate is also very good about using the media to get people to notice them. Allstate has their own news website, to keep consumers in the loop about what is going on with the company. Allstate has used television as a big way to spread their company name. They use memorable commercials, such as the Mayhem guy. Everyone knows who he is and can relate him to Allstate Insurance.

Stage of Lawrence Kohlberg’s Stages of Ethical Reasoning (Development)
Stage of Lawrence Kohlberg’s Stages of Ethical Reasoning
Lawrence Kohlberg was a psychologist who came up with stages of ethical reasoning. He put the stages into three levels: Level 1 (Pre-Conventional), Level 2: (Conventional), and Level 3: (Post-Conventional). The first level includes obedience and punishment orientation, and self-interest orientation. Within the second level is interpersonal accord and conformity and authority and social-order maintaining orientation. The third and final level includes social contract orientation and universal ethical principles (Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development).
Allstate Insurance would most likely be third level of Lawrence Kohlberg's Stages of Ethical Reasoning. Allstate has done a great job with meeting the basic needs of people's insurance. They offer many different types of insurance in order to individualize it to fit your needs. Allstate follows the rules laid down by the law. Everyone knows what Allstate Insurance is because of how popular it is, and they are capable of keeping customers for long periods of time because of how good their insurance is. They do have some work to do in the third level to keep themselves running efficiently, but they are at the end of level three.

Code of Ethics
Code of Ethics is important for every company, including Allstate Insurance. Allstate has included their Code of Ethics on their website so that consumers can access it. The website says, "Always do the right thing in the right way for the right reason. That philosophy is essential to Allstate's business and to our reputation. It builds trust and strengthens relationships within the company, and among our customers and other stakeholders. Every day, we put our values into action through our behaviors, decisions, and interactions" (Ethics and Integrity).
There is an entire page dedicated to the Code of Ethics. It isn't in one booklet, but it is separated out by pages and sections. It isn't as detailed oriented as some Codes of Ethics are, but it does cover the basics that should be known. One of the examples from the Code of Ethics involves the employees responsibilities of following the rules of the law. This is following Kohlberg's Stages of Ethical Reasoning because they are making it clear that following the rules is priority among their company.

While all 3 levels of Allstates Ethical behavior seems to be the most evident established policy.
According to chapter 3 of the Business Ethics Now text book; A Conflict of interest is defined a situation in which one relationship or obligation places you in a direct conflict with an existing relationship or obligation. Among Allstates code of ethics I did not see direct conflicts of interest. What I did see was clearly outline guidelines to avoid conflicts of interest. Allstates objective in avoiding conflicts of interest is to "make prudent decisions and act with integrity". Allstate outlined 5 major conflicts of interest to avoid :
Do not be influenced by what serves personal interest or those interest of a third party , when those interest are contrary to what is best for Allstate.
Use good judgment to make un biased decisions
Avoid both the appearance of conflict as well as conflict
Never give or accept inappropriate gifts
Ensure that close personal relationships do not interfere with business judgment.
Triple Bottom Line
The bottom line is companies taking cooperate social responsibility seriously; It is companies providing social and environmental updates along side their primary bottom-line financial reports.
Allstate shows financial reports as well as many community projects that support their effort in contributing to a high level of cooperate responsibility. In there ethics hand book they have a whole chapter dedicated to the efforts to protect the environment and give back to the community
Corporate Social Responsibility
Allstate is definitely a company doing well by doing good. Corporate social responsibility is the actions of an organization that are targeted toward achieving social benefit over and above maximizing profits for its share holders and meeting all of its legal obligations. Allstate has been an exemplary company displaying high levels of CSR both globally and in communities for example in 1960s the company helped convince the government to make seat belt use mandatory; in the 1970s and 1980s Allstate played an instrumental role in advocating the safety benefits of air bags; and in the 1990s and 2000s Allstate continues to take a public stand on issues that are important to consumers
Evolution/Revolution of Company
For more than 80 years, Allstate leaders, employees and agency owners have been passionate about leading positive change in this country. Allstate's heritage. began in the 1930s and has revolutionized and led the way for all types of insurance. Allstate has made a significant impact on the world both from a cooperate stand point as well as consumer satisfaction; because with Allstate your in good hands.
Allstate has evolved from an idea to a nation's largest publicly held personal lines insurer some may say they were lucky to start with out competition but it is my opinion that they have made a huge impact on the way we do business in America
Corporate Governance
Corporate Governance is the process in which organizations are directed and controlled. Allstate has worked hard to make sure that they are a company built on integrity. “At Allstate, we focus on doing the right thing the right way for the right reason“.
